In our concert project, Aeham Ahmad will sing and play with movements from Sergei Rachmaninov's Vespers Opus 37 in alternation.
We will call for peace together - with the devotional a cappella music from the evening and morning praise as well as in the song of a person, which, arising in the present, touches the hearts of his listeners.
Sergei Rachmaninov composed his "Great Evening and Morning Praise" op.37 in 1915. It is his second work of church music, written for the evening and early morning liturgy, which was celebrated in the monasteries as a continuous service.
Written for a cappella choir, Rachmaninov used some old melodies, comparable to "our" Gregorian chant; in some cases he redesigned both melody and harmonies.
After the October Revolution, during which Rachmaninov and his family fled to America, this work was banned from being performed for 60 years. Rachmaninov considered this composition a work in which – according to a Russian proverb – the mind enters the heart.
The Syrian-Palestinian pianist Aeham Ahmad gained international fame in 2014/2015 through his public performances in the Yarmuk refugee camp – as a "pianist in the rubble" – during the civil war in Syria. In his destroyed Syrian hometown, he gave comfort and hope to his fellow people, especially to the children, with his songs and compositions.
Aeham Ahmad now lives with his family in Germany. He is an example of how you can spread hope and healing through music. Hearing him play live is a very special experience.
